b-sama: The 60% Photography Project in Sierra Leone The 60% photography project is based on Sierra Leone’s illiteracy rates, which according to World Bank figures, is at 59% (the rounding up accounts for the slight variations given by different agencies). Why the concern with (il)literacy? Poverty is perpetuated by lack of education yet an educated society is necessary for the kind of development that will transform the social, economic and political climate. “With education comes the freedom to dream and to think independently.” Communities invited the photographers into their homes and lives, sharing their worries, hopes and dreams.
